iPhone Duo vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: Which Foldable Is Better?

iPhone Duo vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: Which Foldable Is Better?

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 is shaping up to be one of the most interesting foldable phone comparisons.

For years, Samsung has been one of the biggest names in foldable smartphones. Now Apple is finally entering the category with its first foldable iPhone: the iPhone Duo.

And Apple isn’t starting small.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display, a large 7.6-inch folding display, Apple’s new A20 Pro processor, and a starting price of $1,999.

Its most obvious competitor is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, an eighth-generation foldable that starts at $1,899.99.

The two phones look surprisingly similar on paper, but there are some major differences in weight, software, cameras, durability, and overall experience.

When comparing iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8, the biggest difference may come down to how each company approaches the foldable experience.

So which one looks like the better foldable?

Let’s compare.

On paper, this is already a much closer competition than you might expect from Apple’s first attempt at a foldable phone.

Design: First Generation vs. Eighth Generation

This may be the most interesting part of the comparison.

Samsung has been building foldable smartphones since 2019. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 represents years of improvements to hinges, displays, durability, weight, and software.

Apple is entering the category much later.

But the iPhone Duo doesn’t look like a typical first-generation experiment.

Both phones use a passport-style design with a relatively compact outer display and a much larger screen when unfolded.

The biggest difference may actually be weight.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs just 201 grams, while the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams.

That’s a significant 53-gram difference.

Samsung is also thinner when unfolded at 4.5 mm compared with the Duo’s 5.2 mm.

Winner: Galaxy Z Fold 8 🏆

Samsung’s years of foldable development show here. The Fold 8 is considerably lighter and thinner.

Display: Apple Takes Aim at the Crease

Both phones have a 7.6-inch inner display, so neither has a major size advantage.

Apple, however, has focused heavily on one of the biggest complaints about folding phones: the crease.

The iPhone Duo uses a special nano-texture surface together with a redesigned hinge system intended to minimize the visibility of the center crease.

Early hands-on impressions suggest the crease is extremely difficult to see.

Both phones can also reach up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness and offer refresh rates up to 120Hz.

Samsung’s display technology is already excellent, but Apple’s approach to reducing the crease could become one of the Duo’s biggest advantages.

Early Winner: iPhone Duo 🏆

We’ll need real-world testing after launch to know for sure, but the Duo’s nearly invisible crease is promising.

Performance: A20 Pro vs. Snapdragon

The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s new A20 Pro processor.

Apple says the new chip uses a 2-nanometer process and is designed for demanding workloads including gaming, multitasking, and on-device AI.

Samsung uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, another flagship-level processor designed for high-end performance and AI.

For everyday use, both should be extremely fast.

Raw benchmark numbers will be interesting once the Duo reaches reviewers, but performance probably won’t be the deciding factor for most buyers.

Winner: Too Close to Call

Both are flagship-level platforms, and real-world testing will tell us more.

Multitasking: This Is Where Foldables Matter

A big screen isn’t very useful if the software doesn’t take advantage of it.

Samsung has years of experience optimizing Android for folding screens, including side-by-side apps and multitasking tools.

Apple, however, redesigned parts of iOS 27 specifically for the Duo.

Apps can transition between the outer and inner displays, and the larger screen supports multitasking with multiple apps.

The Duo will also support the USB-C Apple Pencil later this year, giving it some interesting similarities to a miniature iPad.

Samsung has experience.

Apple has ecosystem integration.

Winner: Galaxy Z Fold 8 — for now 🏆

Until we spend more time with iOS 27 on a folding screen, Samsung’s mature foldable software deserves the advantage.

Cameras

The iPhone Duo features:

48MP Main + 48MP Ultra Wide

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 features:

50MP Wide + 50MP Ultra Wide

Both offer 2x optical-quality zoom, but neither setup is designed to replace the most camera-focused flagship phones.

One notable omission from the iPhone Duo is a dedicated telephoto camera.

That means buyers who prioritize zoom photography may still prefer a traditional Pro flagship.

Camera quality also cannot be judged simply by megapixel numbers, so this is another category where we’ll want to see direct photo comparisons after the Duo ships.

Winner: TBD

Specifications alone aren’t enough to choose a camera winner.

Battery Life

Apple doesn’t emphasize a traditional single battery-capacity number for the Duo. Instead, the phone uses batteries on both sides of the folding design.

Apple claims up to:

31 hours of video playback using the inner screen

and

44 hours using the outer screen.

Samsung equips the Fold 8 with a 4,800mAh battery and rates it for up to 26 hours of video playback.

These tests aren’t necessarily directly comparable, but Apple’s efficiency claims are impressive.

On Paper Winner: iPhone Duo 🏆

Real-world battery testing will ultimately matter more than manufacturer estimates.

Durability

This is an especially important category for a $2,000 folding phone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 carries an IP48 rating.

Apple gives the iPhone Duo an IP68 rating and uses Grade 5 titanium in its construction.

That’s a surprisingly strong specification for Apple’s first folding phone.

Winner: iPhone Duo 🏆

At least based on the official ratings, Apple has the advantage here.

Price

Here’s where things get interesting.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: $1,899.99

Apple iPhone Duo: $1,999

That’s only about a $100 difference.

For a completely new Apple product category, pricing the Duo just below $2,000 makes the competition much closer than many people may have expected.

Winner: Galaxy Z Fold 8 🏆

It’s cheaper, although the $100 difference probably won’t be enough by itself to decide which phone most buyers choose.

The Biggest Question: iOS or Android?

This may ultimately decide the comparison.

If you already use a Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iCloud, and other Apple products, the iPhone Duo finally gives you something Android manufacturers have offered for years:

a true foldable without leaving the Apple ecosystem.

Samsung users have a different advantage.

The Galaxy Z Fold line has already gone through multiple generations of real-world refinement.

Samsung isn’t learning how to make a foldable anymore.

Apple is.

And when you’re spending around $2,000 on a phone, that experience matters.

Compareason Verdict

This isn’t an easy win for either phone.

🏆 Best Established Foldable: Galaxy Z Fold 8

The Fold 8 is lighter, thinner, less expensive, and backed by years of Samsung foldable development.

For buyers who want a proven foldable experience today, it is the safer choice.

🍎 Best Foldable for Apple Users: iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo may be Apple’s first foldable, but its display technology, A20 Pro performance, IP68 rating, battery claims, and integration with the Apple ecosystem make it a surprisingly serious first attempt.

For someone already deeply invested in Apple products, this could easily be the more attractive phone.

Our Pick Right Now: Galaxy Z Fold 8 — by a small margin

Why?

Because the iPhone Duo hasn’t reached customers yet.

Samsung’s Fold 8 is already an eighth-generation product, while Apple’s long-term hinge durability, battery performance, software behavior, and folding display reliability still need to be proven in everyday use.

But this comparison could change quickly.

The iPhone Duo goes up for preorder on October 16 and becomes available on October 23.

Once real-world reviews arrive, this could become one of the closest smartphone battles we’ve seen in years.
